2021 was… a better year? We’re not out of this awful pandemic, especially with the COVID variants that have been popping up. But with many movie theaters reopening with safety measures and the vaccines being produced, a lot of the films that got delayed finally got released this year. It felt nice to go to the movies again, and there was a good amount that came out in 2021 that entertained or inspired me. As such, a Top 5 won’t cut it this time. These are my Top 10 Films of 2021 (it’s been a while, hasn’t it?).
Like my last list, the films don’t have to be theatrically released. If it’s good enough, then that’s what matters most. You’ll see one or two films that went straight to streaming against those that had a theatrical or simultaneous release. But first, some honorable mentions are in order:
- Hilda and the Mountain King – If you’re a fan of the show, then you’re in for a good time. It carries over a lot of the warmth and wholesomeness, while still telling a fun story.
- No Time to Die – A solid end to the Daniel Craig era of the James Bond franchise. It’s action-packed, funny, and emotional. Also, Ana de Armas stole the show as Paloma.
- Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings – A solid origin story with a great cast, well-written villain, and entertaining action sequences.
- Zack Snyder’s Justice League – Saying it’s a huge improvement over the theatrical cut isn’t saying much. It’s a well-directed and compelling narrative and it’s great to see Snyder finally bring his vision to life.
